Guide

Which massage should you choose?

Six full body styles and three shorter treatments can make a spa menu look complicated. Start from how you feel and the choice gets simple.

Start from how you feel, not from the name

Most people do not need to know the history of a technique to enjoy it. What matters is whether you want to relax, loosen something stiff, or simply be looked after for an hour. Answer that, and two or three styles drop out of the list straight away.

If you mainly want to relax

Swedish massage is the safe, familiar choice: smooth strokes and even pressure. Aromatherapy is gentler still and adds the scent of essential oils. Either one suits a first visit.

If something feels stiff or knotted

Deep tissue massage slows down and presses deeper into the tight areas. Balinese massage sits in between, mixing point pressure and stretches with flowing strokes. If you have never had firm pressure before, Balinese is the gentler way in.

If you want a slow, oil-rich treatment

Ayurvedic massage uses generous warm oil in the Indian tradition. Lomi Lomi, from Hawaii, uses long forearm strokes that flow across the whole body and runs for a full 90 minutes.

If you only have a short window

A 45 minute foot massage or a 30 minute head, or neck and shoulder, massage fits into a lunch break. Book two of them back to back if you have an hour.
